Karate can be learned by anyone. Karate is both a physical and mental discipline. It teaches balance, dexterity, coordination, and will exercise both cardiovascular and respiratory systems.

Dojo Kun:

1. ) I WILL STRIVE FOR PERFECTION OF CHARACTER.

This is something you will never find in yourself. The harder you try the more flaws you will find. The more flaws you find and correct the better person you will become. If you stop seeking perfection your growth will stop, and you will become arrogant and proud. Your character will become more flawed than before. By continuing to seek perfection you will become humbled by the imperfections you find and thereby find true character.
* Apply this principle to your kata *

2. ) I WILL BE FAITHFUL TO THE TRUTH.

Good and evil, truth and error, positive and negative exists must be found before one can be faithful to it. This is the Yin & Yang poles. This requires diligent investigation, discernment, experience, knowledge of human nature and impartiality.. Once you find the truth, to be faithful to it, you must support, defend and preach it with your dying breath.

3. ) I WILL FOSTER THE SPIRIT OF EFFORT.

The spirit of man is the unseen force that drives his or her determination. This is the key element in not being defeated. Karate exercises this by pushing you to do your best, try your hardest, put your whole heart into what you want to accomplish.
To me - karate is the study of the spirit of man.

4. ) I WILL COURTEOUS AND RESPECTFUL TO OTHERS.

This is knowing your proper place. I line everyone up in class according to seniority and rank. This helps everyone to be conscious of their proper place. In class, we adopt many aspects of Japanese culture and etiquette such as bowing, removal of shoes, acknowledging instruction with "Yes sensei" or "oss" and Saying "arigato" when help is given and at the end of class. Hopefully, this training will translate into students being aware of using proper etiquette outside the classroom. Not being respectful and courteous is the reason for most confrontations.

5. ) I WILL GUARD AGAINST IMPETUOUS COURAGE.

This is uncontrolled anger, or losing your temper. One who doesn't get angry at injustice is not just. The difficult task is to express or release the anger in a righteous way.

About Our School

We teach the art of traditional Shotokan karate. Shotokan was founded by Gichin Funakoshi, who introduced the art to Japan in the 1920's at age 53.

Karate is a counter-attacking art and was never designed for initiating an attack. Karate was designed to defend against multiple opponents. Karate was not meant to be a competitive sport but an art of self-development. We will maintain an attitude of helping and encouraging each other versus competing against each other.

Students advance at their own pace. The more you put into your training the more you will get out of it. We are affiliated with the Dai-Ichi Karate Association of the United States of America. Please, visit the web site daiichikarate.org to learn more about the history of the Dai-Ichi Karate Association.
